Why Moore drains clog the way they do
Moore grew almost overnight. The town had 1,783 residents in 1960 and 18,761 by 1970, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society, and Census estimates show that roughly one in five of Moore's homes today was built in the 1970s alone. Many houses from that era sit on slabs with cast-iron drain lines running underneath. Cast iron lasts a long time, but its inside wall slowly rusts and builds rough scale. After fifty years, a 2-inch kitchen line can have a much smaller opening, and every bit of grease that passes sticks to that rough surface.
The soil adds its own trouble. Central Oklahoma clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and expansive soil like that is on the Oklahoma Geological Survey's list of geologic hazards for the state. Under a slab, that movement can settle a section of drain line into a shallow sag, called a belly, where water and solids sit instead of flowing. A drain with a belly clogs at the same spot again and again.
Homes rebuilt after the 1999 and 2013 tornadoes are a different story. They usually have PVC drains, which are smooth and do not scale. When those clog, it is almost always grease, wipes, hair or a garbage disposal doing more than it should.
Signs the clog is in the main line
- More than one fixture is slow or backing up at the same time
- The tub or shower gurgles or fills when you flush a toilet
- Water comes up a floor drain or shower when the washing machine drains
- A sewer smell in the house that comes and goes
- Backups that happen mostly during or right after heavy rain
A single slow sink is usually a branch clog. Several at once point to the main line between the house and the street, which needs a bigger machine and a different approach.
When a cleaning is not the whole answer
If the camera shows heavy scale or a belly under the slab, cleaning buys time but does not fix the pipe. Options range from descaling to replacing a short section. If your drains only back up in storms like the one over Easter weekend in 2025, when News 9 reported close to five inches falling at the nearest gauge in an hour and a half, have the lateral checked for cracks or roots that leave no room for extra flow.
