Sewer Odor Detection & Repair in Oklahoma City, OK

Sewer odor detection in Oklahoma City starts with one question: where is the gas getting out? A sewer smell means the seal between your drain system and your living space has failed somewhere, whether that is a dry trap, a bad wax ring, a cracked pipe in a wall or a vent problem. We find that spot with smoke and a camera, fix it, and confirm the smell is gone.

What's included in our sewer odor detection in Oklahoma City

Your drain system is full of sewer gas all the time. It stays out of the house only because of water seals in the traps, airtight pipe and fittings, and vents that carry the gas out above the roof. A smell means one of those has failed. Our sewer odor service finds which one:

  • Fixture-by-fixture check. We look at every trap, toilet, floor drain and cleanout, starting with the ones that are rarely used.
  • Smoke testing. Smoke pushed into the drain system escapes wherever the system leaks, inside walls and under floors included.
  • Camera inspection. A sewer camera inspection looks for cracked pipe, broken fittings and separated joints in drains and the sewer line.
  • Vent check. We confirm roof vents are open and that any air admittance valves are sealing.
  • The repair. Once we find the source, we fix it and confirm the smell is gone.

Signs the smell is coming from your plumbing

  • A rotten-egg or sewage smell that is strongest in one bathroom, laundry room or basement
  • An odor that shows up after a toilet is flushed or a tub drains
  • A smell near a floor drain, especially in a garage, utility room or commercial kitchen
  • Gurgling drains along with the odor, which can point to a venting problem
  • A sewage smell outside near the foundation or over the sewer line
  • Stains, dampness or a soft floor around a toilet base

The most common sources of sewer gas in a building

Dry traps

Every fixture trap holds a water seal, and the plumbing code adopted in Oklahoma calls for a seal of 2 to 4 inches. In a guest bath, a basement shower or a floor drain that rarely gets water, that seal evaporates. The code requires emergency floor drain traps and traps subject to evaporation to have seal protection, such as a trap primer.

Failed toilet wax rings

A toilet that rocks, or one that was reset without a new seal, can leak gas around its base every time it is flushed.

Vent problems

Blocked roof vents, failed air admittance valves and vents that end near a window can all let gas into the house or allow traps to siphon dry.

Cracked drain pipe

Old cast-iron stacks and drains crack with age, and a split fitting inside a wall releases gas you cannot see. When the camera finds scaled or cracked cast iron, cast-iron pipe descaling helps reveal how much of the pipe is sound.

Loose or missing cleanout caps

A cleanout cap that was left loose after a drain cleaning is a direct opening into the sewer.

Our sewer odor detection process

  1. Talk through the pattern. We ask when and where you notice the smell, and what was running at the time.
  2. Check the easy causes first. We refill unused traps and inspect toilets, floor drains and cleanout caps.
  3. Smoke test. We seal the system and introduce smoke, then trace it to where it escapes.
  4. Camera the drains. We look inside stacks, branch drains and the sewer line for cracks and breaks.
  5. Make the repair. Wax rings, trap protection, vent repairs and pipe sections are fixed to code.
  6. Confirm it is fixed. We retest the repaired area and check back with you after normal use.

Odor sources and fixes compared

Dry trapSmell near an unused fixture or floor drainRefill, then add a trap primer or approved seal protection
Toilet wax ringOdor or stains at the toilet baseReset the toilet on a new seal and secure the flange
Vent problemGurgling drains and smell after heavy drainingClear or repair the vent, or replace a failed air admittance valve
Cracked drain pipeSmell inside a wall or under a floorReplace the cracked section or fitting
Broken sewer lineOdor outdoors over the line, soggy soilSpot repair or replacement of the lateral

If the smoke or camera points to a broken lateral, sewer line repair stops the odor and the leak at the same time.

What affects the cost of sewer odor detection and repair

We price the work after we know what is causing the smell. The main factors:

  • How hidden the source is. A dry trap takes minutes. A crack inside a finished wall takes testing and opening.
  • Testing needed. Smoke testing and camera work add time, and they save you from opening the wrong wall.
  • Type of repair. Resetting a toilet is a small job. Replacing a section of cast-iron stack is a larger one.
  • Access. Roof vents, crawlspaces and slab drains each take different effort to reach.

Sewer smells in Oklahoma City homes and buildings

Long, hot Oklahoma City summers dry out traps quickly in guest baths, basements and garages that sit unused for weeks. Many older homes here have cast-iron drains that crack at fittings with age, and slab homes hide those drains under concrete, which is where smoke testing and a camera save a lot of guesswork. Commercial kitchens, restrooms and mechanical rooms often have floor drains that rarely see water, and the code expects those traps to be protected.

Codes changed recently too. Oklahoma City adopted the 2018 International Plumbing Code with local amendments in February 2024, and repairs we make to traps, vents and drains follow that code.

When a sewer smell is a safety problem

Do not get used to the smell. OSHA warns that at high concentrations, hydrogen sulfide can cause loss of smell, so a fading odor is not proof the gas is gone. OSHA also notes the gas is heavier than air and can collect in low, enclosed spaces. Never enter a sewer pit, manhole or crawlspace that smells strongly of sewage. If you feel dizzy or sick, get to fresh air and call for help.

Why Oklahoma City chooses us for sewer odor detection

40+ yrs

Years of chasing hard-to-find smells

Our plumbing experience goes back to 1985, and sewer smells are some of the trickiest. They come and go with the weather, the wind and which fixtures were used last. Four decades in the trade means we know the usual suspects in local homes, from a guest shower nobody uses to a cracked cast-iron fitting behind a vanity, and checks them in a sensible order.

Licensed

Real repairs, not air fresheners

Masking a sewer smell does nothing about the gas. Once we find the source, we make the plumbing repair: a new wax ring, trap seal protection on a floor drain, a sealed cleanout cap, a replaced section of drain or a repaired vent. Our licensed plumbers do the work, and the fix is done to the plumbing code, not smeared over with caulk.

Evidence you can see

Smoke testing makes the invisible visible. You can watch smoke curl out of the exact spot where sewer gas has been leaking, and we show you camera footage of any drain damage we find. That kind of plain evidence is a big reason our customers rate us 4.9 stars across 88 Google reviews. You will know what failed and why before we fix anything.

These guys were great! A breath of fresh air from the usual contractor/service. They cared about fixing the problem not how much they can charge. I had a same day service need, leak in between floors, the day before a trip. They came out same day and presented multiple solutions as well as keen explanations.

Sewer Odor Detection questions, answered

Is sewer gas dangerous?

In most homes the amounts are small, but sewer gas should not be ignored. OSHA notes that hydrogen sulfide, often called sewer gas, has a rotten-egg odor some people notice at very low levels, and that high concentrations can deaden your sense of smell. A rotten-egg smell near a gas appliance may be a natural gas leak instead, so leave and call your gas utility.

Why does my bathroom smell like sewer only some of the time?

Intermittent smells usually point to a trap that dries out between uses, a wax ring that leaks only when the toilet is flushed or rocked, or a vent problem that lets traps siphon when a large volume drains. Wind and weather change how gas moves in the vent system too. Smoke testing helps because it finds leaks whether or not they are active when we arrive.

Can a dry floor drain cause a sewer smell?

Yes, and it is one of the most common causes. Every trap holds a water seal, and the plumbing code calls for a seal of 2 to 4 inches. In a floor drain or a fixture that is rarely used, that water evaporates and gas comes straight up. Pouring water in is the quick fix. A trap primer or other approved seal protection is the lasting one.

What is a smoke test?

We close off the drain system and blow smoke made for plumbing leak testing into it through a cleanout or vent. Wherever the system leaks, smoke shows up: around a toilet base, through a crack in a wall, from a loose cleanout cap or out of the ground over a broken pipe. It finds leaks that a camera alone can miss, especially in vents.

Can a sewer smell come from outside the house?

Yes. A broken sewer line in the yard, a missing cleanout cap, a roof vent near a window or air intake, or a nearby City manhole can all cause odors outdoors and sometimes inside. We check the outside before opening walls. If the source is the City's system rather than your private line, we will tell you so you can report it to the City.
