What's included in our trenchless sewer repair in Oklahoma City

Trenchless sewer repair means replacing or renewing a buried sewer line without digging it up end to end. The work happens through one or two small pits, and the rest of your yard stays where it is. A typical job includes:

  • Recorded camera inspection. A sewer camera inspection maps the pipe material, defects, depth and any branch connections before we choose a method.
  • Line cleaning. Roots, grease and scale are cleared so a liner bonds or a bursting head can travel.
  • Access pits. We dig only where the new pipe enters and exits, usually near the foundation and near the connection.
  • Pipe bursting or lining. New HDPE pipe is pulled through the old path, or a resin liner is cured inside the existing pipe.
  • Reconnection, testing and inspection. We tie in the ends, record the finished line on camera and get the work inspected.

Signs your sewer line may be a trenchless candidate

Trenchless methods work best on lines that are failing but still follow a usable path. Good candidates often show:

  • Roots coming back through the same joints after every cleaning
  • Cracked or offset clay tile joints along much of the run
  • Cast-iron pipe with heavy corrosion but no full collapse
  • A line that runs under a driveway, patio, mature trees or a fence you do not want torn out
  • Repeat backups that a camera traces to damage spread along the pipe, not one bad spot

If the camera instead finds a single break, a sewer line repair on that one section is often the simpler and cheaper fix.

Pipe Bursting: a new sewer line through the path of the old one

Pipe bursting replaces the old line completely. A cone-shaped bursting head is pulled through the existing pipe, breaking it apart and pushing the fragments into the surrounding soil, while new pipe follows right behind it. When the head reaches the far pit, you have a brand-new line where the old one was.

The plumbing code in Oklahoma has specific rules for this work, and we follow every one of them:

  • Size limits. Bursting is limited to gravity drain pipe 6 inches and smaller, and the new pipe must match the old pipe's nominal size.
  • Pipe type. The replacement must be HDPE with a standard dimension ratio of 17, meeting ASTM F714.
  • Video before and after. The old line must be recorded on camera first, noting cleanouts and connection depths. The finished line is recorded again, and the code official reviews that video before the pressure test.
  • Cleanouts. If the old line had no code-compliant cleanouts, they must be added.

Because HDPE is fused into one continuous piece, a burst line has no gasketed joints along its length. That is a big advantage on a property where roots have been the problem for years.

Pipe lining for cracked pipe that still holds its shape

Cured-in-place lining renews the pipe from the inside instead of replacing it. A resin-soaked liner is inserted through a cleanout or small pit, inflated against the old pipe wall and cured in place, leaving a smooth new pipe inside the old one. Lining fits cracked, root-damaged or corroded pipe that is still round and on grade. It does not fix a sag or bridge a missing section, and branch connections have to be reopened after curing.

Our trenchless sewer repair process

  1. Clear and inspect. We open the line and record a full camera survey with distances, depths and connections.
  2. Choose the method. You see the footage, and we recommend bursting, lining, a spot repair or a combination.
  3. Permit and locates. We pull the permit and have buried utilities marked before digging access pits.
  4. Install the new pipe or liner. The bursting head pulls new HDPE through, or the liner is placed and cured.
  5. Reconnect and record. We tie in the house and main ends with approved fittings and record the finished line on camera.
  6. Inspect and restore. After inspection and testing, we backfill the pits and leave the site clean.

Trenchless and open-trench methods compared

MethodBest forLimits
Pipe burstingFull replacement of a failing line under drives, trees or landscapingNeeds two access pits, same nominal size, 6 inches and smaller
Cured-in-place liningCracked or root-damaged pipe that is still round and on gradeCannot fix sags or collapsed sections, and slightly reduces inside diameter
Open-trench replacementBellies, wrong slope, collapses or very shallow linesThe most digging and surface restoration
Spot repairOne break in otherwise sound pipeThe rest of the old line stays in service

If roots are the only issue and the pipe is still sound, sewer root removal may hold you over until a trenchless replacement fits the budget.

What affects the cost of trenchless sewer replacement

We price the actual job after we have seen the line on camera. The main cost drivers:

  • Length and depth. Longer and deeper runs take more pipe and deeper access pits.
  • Method. Bursting, lining and open trench each have different material and equipment costs.
  • Pipe condition. Heavy roots or scale add cleaning time before lining.
  • Branch connections. Each side connection that must be reopened or rebuilt adds work.
  • Pit locations. A pit in a flower bed is quicker to restore than one through concrete.

Trenchless sewer replacement in Oklahoma City: local factors

Many older Oklahoma City homes sit on lots with mature trees, long driveways and laterals made of clay tile or cast iron, which is exactly where trenchless methods earn their keep. The Morton Arboretum notes that older pipes often fail at the joints from age or slight soil movement, and the clay soil common here swells and shrinks with wet and dry seasons. A fused HDPE line has no joints to pull apart.

Oklahoma City amends the state plumbing code in a few places that matter for trenchless work. One local amendment requires cleanouts that serve both directions on drain pipe leaving a building, so we add one during trenchless replacement where it is missing. That cleanout makes the next camera inspection much easier. To learn more about how we work, start at our Oklahoma City plumbing home page.

Why Oklahoma City chooses us for trenchless sewer repair

40+ yrs

The right method, not the trendy one

Our plumbing experience goes back to 1985, and that long view keeps the recommendation honest. We will tell you plainly when pipe bursting or lining is the smart call and when a short open trench is cheaper and better, such as a deep sag right outside the foundation. The goal is a sewer line that drains properly, not a sales pitch for one technique.

Licensed

Permitted, recorded and inspected

Trenchless replacement is still plumbing work under the code, with a permit, camera records and an inspection. Our licensed plumbers pull the permit and schedule the inspection, and we handle the paperwork so you do not have to. The code requires recorded video of the line before and after pipe bursting, and we share that footage with you, not just with the inspector.

These guys were great! A breath of fresh air from the usual contractor/service. They cared about fixing the problem not how much they can charge. I had a same day service need, leak in between floors, the day before a trip. They came out same day and presented multiple solutions as well as keen explanations.

Trenchless Sewer Repair questions, answered

Is trenchless sewer replacement really no-dig?

Not completely. Pipe bursting needs an access pit at each end of the run, usually one near the house and one near the connection, and lining usually works through a cleanout or a small pit. What you avoid is the long trench across the yard, driveway or garden, which means far less to restore when the job is done.

What size sewer lines can be replaced by pipe bursting?

Under the 2018 International Plumbing Code as adopted in Oklahoma, pipe bursting of building sewers and building drains is limited to gravity drain pipe 6 inches and smaller, and the new pipe must be the same nominal size as the old one. That covers the 4-inch line Oklahoma City sets as the minimum size for a private sewer service line.

When is trenchless not a good option?

A line with a deep belly, where a section has sunk and holds standing water, usually keeps that sag after lining, and bursting follows the same path. Fully collapsed sections, the wrong slope and some tight bends can also rule trenchless out. The camera inspection tells us whether it will work before you commit, and sometimes the answer is one short trench plus trenchless for the rest.

What kind of pipe goes in during pipe bursting?

The plumbing code requires high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, pipe with a standard dimension ratio of 17 that meets ASTM F714, plus HDPE fittings that meet ASTM D2683. HDPE is heat-fused into one continuous length, so there are no gasketed joints along the run for roots to work into, and it is flexible enough to pull through the old pipe's path.

Will trenchless sewer work hurt my trees?

It is usually far gentler on trees than an open trench. The Morton Arboretum notes that major tree roots often grow within a few inches of the soil surface, and that cutting just one major root near the trunk can remove up to 25 percent of the root system. With trenchless work we keep the digging to small pits placed away from the trunk.
