Garbage Disposal Repair & Replacement in Oklahoma City, OK

Quick garbage disposal repair in Oklahoma City often starts with a phone call, because many jams clear with a wrench and a reset button. When that does not work, or the unit is leaking from the bottom, we come out, find out whether it can be saved, and repair or replace it along with the drain connections that tie it to your sink.

What's included in our garbage disposal repair in Oklahoma City

A disposal problem is rarely just the disposal. We look at the unit and everything connected to it:

  • Jams. Freeing a stuck flywheel and removing whatever caused it.
  • Power problems. Reset buttons, switches, cords and the outlet or circuit feeding the unit.
  • Leaks. Sink flange seals, the dishwasher inlet, the discharge tube and the trap below it.
  • Clogs. Clearing the kitchen drain line that a disposal often gets blamed for.
  • Replacement with a new unit, mounting assembly and connections when the old one is done.

Signs your disposal needs repair or replacement

  • A hum when you flip the switch, but no grinding
  • Nothing at all when you flip the switch
  • The unit shuts itself off partway through grinding
  • Water dripping from the bottom of the unit or pooling in the cabinet
  • Loud metal-on-metal grinding or rattling
  • A sink that drains slowly or backs up into the other bowl
  • A sour smell that does not go away after running the unit with water

Safe steps to try before you call

Never put your hand in a disposal. InSinkErator's own instructions say not to place your hand in it at any time. Turn the switch off, or unplug the unit, before you do anything else, and use tongs or pliers to pull out anything you can see.

  1. Cut the power. Switch it off at the wall, or unplug it under the sink.
  2. Free the flywheel. Find the hex socket in the center of the bottom of the unit. Use the wrench that came with it, or a 1/4-inch Allen wrench, and work it back and forth until it turns freely.
  3. Press the reset. The red overload button is on the bottom of the unit. Press it gently. If it will not stay up, wait ten minutes and try again.
  4. Run cold water, then power. Turn on a strong flow of cold water and switch the unit on.
  5. Call if it still fails. Repeated tripping, a constant hum or any leak means it is time for a plumber.

Repair or replace your garbage disposal

Repair makes sense when the unit is sound and the trouble is a jam, a tripped overload, a bad switch or a leaking connection. Replacement makes sense when the body leaks, the motor will not run after a reset and a power check, the grinding chamber is badly corroded, or the unit trips every time it runs. If you have reset the same disposal several times in a month, it is wearing out. We give you the price of both options, and we do not push a new unit on a disposal that still has years left.

Sometimes the disposal is fine and the sink is the problem. A leaking faucet, a cracked basin or a loose sink strainer on the other bowl can all look like a disposal leak, and our faucet and sink repair service sorts that out on the same visit.

Garbage disposal replacement and installation

We size a new unit to how you cook and how your kitchen is plumbed, then install it properly. The plumbing code Oklahoma uses requires household disposers to conform to ASSE 1008 and be listed to UL 430, so we install listed units only. Every replacement includes:

  • A new sink flange and mounting assembly, sealed so it will not drip into the cabinet
  • Removing the dishwasher knockout plug when a dishwasher drains through the unit
  • Lining up the discharge with the trap so it drains with proper fall
  • Connecting the unit to its switch or plug as the manufacturer specifies
  • Testing with water and a full dishwasher cycle

If you are replacing the sink or faucet at the same time, our fixture installation service handles the whole kitchen sink in one trip.

Habits that keep a disposal running

Disposals that fail early have usually been overloaded or fed the wrong things. A few habits make a real difference:

  • Start the cold water first, keep it running while you grind, and let it run a few seconds after the grinding sound stops.
  • Feed scraps in a little at a time. InSinkErator advises against overfilling the unit at one time.
  • Scrape plates into the trash first and use the disposal for the small bits that are left.
  • Run it every few days, even briefly, so the parts inside do not sit idle and stick.
  • Skip chemical drain openers. They sit in the grinding chamber and do nothing for a jam.

What affects the cost of disposal repair

  • Repair or replacement. Clearing a jam is a short visit. A new unit adds the cost of the disposal itself.
  • The unit you choose. Larger motors and quieter models cost more.
  • Connections. A corroded trap, a new dishwasher hose or a reworked drain adds time.

We quote the actual job once we see it, and financing is available for larger kitchen plumbing work.

Disposals and grease in Oklahoma City kitchens

The City of Oklahoma City reports that more than one-third of sewer line blockages in the city are caused by fats, oils and grease, and it says the average kitchen disposer will not break grease down enough to prevent clogs. A disposal chops food, but it does nothing to keep grease from cooling and sticking to the pipe a few feet downstream. That is why kitchen sinks with disposals still clog. If your kitchen line keeps backing up, routine drain cleaning opens it, and hydro jetting scrubs years of grease off the pipe walls. Want to know more about us? Start at our homepage.

After more than 40 years in the plumbing trade, our plumbers can tell the difference fast, and we tell you straight which one you have. You will not be talked into a new unit when a reset and a new gasket will do the job.

Licensed

Plumbing connections done right

A disposal sits where the sink, the drain line and the dishwasher all meet, and a sloppy connection at any of them leaks into the cabinet. Our licensed plumbers install the mounting, the discharge and trap, and the dishwasher inlet so they line up and seal properly. We are licensed and insured, so the whole sink assembly gets handled correctly in one visit rather than leaving a hidden drip behind.

Kitchen down? We answer

A dead disposal with a sink full of standing water stops dinner, and it always seems to happen right before company comes over. We answer 24/7, nights, weekends and holidays included. Often we can talk you through clearing a jam on the phone. If not, same-day service is often available, so your kitchen sink is back in service without a long wait.

These guys were great! A breath of fresh air from the usual contractor/service. They cared about fixing the problem not how much they can charge. I had a same day service need, leak in between floors, the day before a trip. They came out same day and presented multiple solutions as well as keen explanations.

Garbage Disposal Repair questions, answered

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not spin?

A hum without grinding usually means the motor has power but the flywheel is jammed by something hard, like a fruit pit or a bottle cap. Turn the power off, then turn the hex socket in the center of the bottom of the unit to work it free. InSinkErator says a standard 1/4-inch Allen wrench works if you lost the original.

My disposal will not turn on at all. What should I check?

Look under the unit for the small red reset button and press it gently. InSinkErator says that if it does not stay up, wait ten minutes and try again. Then check the breaker and, if the unit plugs in, the outlet. If it still will not run, the switch, wiring or motor may have failed, and that is a call for us.

Why is my disposal leaking from the bottom?

A leak from the bottom of the unit usually means the internal seals have failed and water is getting into the motor housing. That is not worth repairing, and the unit should be replaced. Leaks from the top, at the sink flange, or from the side, at the dishwasher hose or discharge pipe, are usually connections we can fix.

What should never go down a garbage disposal?

InSinkErator says never put fats, oils or grease in a disposal or down any sink drain, and the City of Oklahoma City warns that kitchen disposers will not break grease down enough to prevent clogs. Keep out anything that is not food, and feed coffee grounds and eggshells in gradually with a strong flow of cold water.

Can you connect a new disposal to my dishwasher?

Yes. Most disposals have a dishwasher inlet on the side that is sealed with a knockout plug from the factory. The plug has to come out before the dishwasher drain hose is attached, or the dishwasher will not drain. We remove it, connect the hose with a proper high loop or air gap, and run the dishwasher to check for leaks.
