Spencer: a 1901 townsite that boomed in the 1960s

Spencer is older than many of the towns around it. In 1901 Oklahoma City businessmen Louis and Henry Kramer developed the townsite through their Canadian River Water Power Company and named it for their home of Spencer County, Indiana. The site sat in Crutcho Township, farm country on the North Canadian River floodplain, close to the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway. For decades the town stayed at roughly 300 people. A 1948 push for gas utility service led to incorporation, and after World War II, jobs at the nearby General Motors plant and Tinker Air Force Base drew new residents. By the 1990s Willow View Hospital was the town's largest employer, while most working residents commuted elsewhere in the metro.

The real growth came in the 1960s, when the population jumped from 1,189 to 3,713 and the city annexed several nearby housing additions. Spencer now covers about 5.3 square miles, Oklahoma City borders it on three sides, and the 2020 census counted 3,982 residents.

Spencer's housing stock

The Census housing numbers match that history. The American Community Survey counts about 1,900 housing units in Spencer, roughly 1,600 of them detached single-family houses. The 1960s were the biggest building decade at about 550 units, followed by about 380 in the 1980s, and the estimated median year built is 1969. The town also has about 54 mobile homes and about 216 units in small apartment buildings of five to nine units. About a third of households rent.

For a plumber in Spencer, that points to a few common starting places. The 1960s houses are at the age when galvanized supply lines, cast-iron drains and original sewer laterals wear out, often all at once. The 1980s homes are now about forty years old, which is old enough for supply valves, water heater connections and the sewer lateral to deserve a look. Mobile homes need their own approach, because their supply lines usually run under the floor inside the skirting, where a gap lets wind reach the pipe. Intact skirting and insulation on exposed lines are the two best defenses before a cold snap.

Spencer water and the February 2021 freeze

Spencer runs its own city water system. Federal drinking water records list the City of Spencer system as groundwater-supplied, with about 1,200 service connections. When something goes wrong on the city side, such as a main break or a citywide outage, the city handles it. Leaks and pressure problems past the meter are usually the property owner's to fix, and that is the work we do. If your water runs rusty or cloudy right after a city main repair, run the cold tap for a few minutes before you call anyone.

Spencer felt the February 2021 freeze directly. Oklahoma City dropped to minus 14°F on February 16, its second-lowest reading on record according to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey, and on February 19 the City of Spencer set up a drinking water distribution station at the fire department to help residents with no or low water flow, Fox 25 reported. If your neighbors have water and you do not, the freeze is probably in your own line, usually in an outside wall, a garage or the riser where the line comes up from the ground. Our frozen pipe repair service and the tips on our winter plumbing page can help you get through the next one.

City limits and permits around Spencer

Because Oklahoma City wraps around Spencer on three sides, a house near town can sit inside Spencer's city limits or inside Oklahoma City, and that decides which office reviews the permit and sends the inspector. Inside Spencer, the city handles it. Inside Oklahoma City, the permit comes from the city's Development Services office. We confirm the jurisdiction before we start any permitted job, then file the paperwork and schedule the inspection. For bigger projects such as a sewer line replacement or whole-house repiping, that step keeps the job on schedule.

Emergency & Everyday Plumbing in Spencer

24/7 Emergency Plumbing Services

From a burst line on a freezing night to a sewer backup on a holiday, Spencer residents can reach us 24/7. We tell you what to shut off first, then get moving toward your door.

Drain Cleaning & Clogged Drain Repair

A 1960s house in Spencer has had six decades of grease, hair and soap going down its drains. We clear clogs in kitchens, baths and laundries and check the main line when several drains are slow at once.

Toilet Repair & Installation

We repair running, clogged and leaking toilets in Spencer homes and rentals, and we install new water-saving toilets when an old one is cracked, worn out or simply wastes too much water.

Faucet & Sink Repair

Dripping faucets, leaky sink drains and stuck shutoff valves are everyday repairs in Spencer kitchens and bathrooms. We fix them with quality parts or replace the fixture when it is past saving.

Garbage Disposal Repair & Replacement

If your Spencer kitchen disposal is jammed, leaking or dead, we repair or replace it and make sure the drain and dishwasher connection below it are clear and tight.

Water Pressure Problems & Repair

Weak pressure at one fixture is usually a local clog. Weak pressure everywhere in a Spencer home points to the service line, corroded pipe or a regulator. We find out which and fix it.

Plumbing Fixture Installation & Replacement

Upgrading a kitchen or bath in Spencer? We install new faucets, sinks, toilets, tubs and showers and replace the supply lines and shutoff valves that go with them.

Water Heater Services in Spencer

Water Heater Repair

We repair Spencer water heaters that will not light, run out of hot water fast or leak at the fittings, including the breakdowns that always seem to happen in the middle of winter.

Water Heater Replacement & Installation

When a Spencer water heater reaches the end of its life, we replace it with the right size and type, set it in a proper pan where needed and connect gas, venting and relief lines to code.

Tankless Water Heater Installation & Repair

Tankless water heaters give continuous hot water and free up space in a Spencer utility closet. We install them, repair them and flush out mineral scale so they keep working efficiently.

Hot Water Recirculation Pump Installation

Tired of running the tap while you wait for hot water? A recirculation pump keeps hot water near your fixtures, and many Spencer homes can add one without opening walls.

Leak Detection, Water Lines & Repiping in Spencer

Slab Leak Detection & Repair

A slab leak in a Spencer home often shows up first as a higher water bill or the faint sound of running water. We pinpoint the leak and repair it directly or reroute the line above the floor.

Water Leak Detection & Repair

Hidden leaks waste water and money long before they show. We test for leaks in Spencer homes, inside walls, under floors and along buried lines, with acoustic and pressure tools, then repair what we find.

Water Line Repair & Replacement

If your yard stays wet or the pressure drops throughout your Spencer home, the buried water line may be leaking. We repair it or replace the full run from the meter to the house.

Whole-House Repiping

Galvanized pipe from the 1960s often rusts closed from the inside. Whole-house repiping in Spencer replaces it with PEX or copper, restoring pressure and ending the cycle of repeat leaks.

Lead Water Service Line Replacement

If you are not sure what your Spencer service line is made of, we can check where it enters the house. If it turns out to be lead or galvanized, we replace it from the meter to the home.

Smart Water Shutoff Valve Installation

A smart shutoff valve watches for leaks and closes your main automatically. It is a good fit for Spencer homes and rentals that sit empty during travel or between tenants.

Sewer & Drain Line Services in Spencer

Sewer Line Repair & Replacement

Sewer laterals laid during Spencer's 1960s building boom are now around sixty years old. When one cracks, sags or separates, we repair or replace it and connect it cleanly to the city main.

Hydro Jetting

When grease and roots keep clogging an older Spencer sewer line, hydro jetting cleans the pipe wall from end to end. It also prepares the line for a camera inspection or a liner repair.

Sewer Camera Inspection

A camera inspection shows exactly what is happening inside a Spencer sewer line: roots, cracks, sags or a collapsed section. Homebuyers can order a sewer scope before closing to avoid surprises.

Trenchless Sewer Repair & Replacement

If a driveway, patio or tree sits over your Spencer sewer lateral, trenchless repair or pipe bursting can replace the line with far less digging than a traditional open trench.

Cast-Iron Sewer Pipe Descaling

Cast-iron drains in 1960s Spencer houses collect rust scale that narrows the pipe and catches waste. Descaling clears the buildup and can extend the useful life of the drain line.

Sewer Root Removal

Roots work into the joints of older sewer lines under Spencer yards. We cut and flush them out, then show you on camera whether the pipe needs a repair to stop the problem for good.

Main Sewer Cleanout Installation

A main sewer cleanout gives us quick access to clear your line without pulling a toilet. We install cleanouts on Spencer homes that never had one or have one buried out of reach.

Sewer Odor Detection & Repair

Persistent sewer odors in a Spencer home point to a dry trap, a leaking seal, a vent problem or a cracked line. We use smoke testing and cameras to locate the source.

Winter Freeze Protection & Repair in Spencer

Burst Pipe Repair

Burst pipes in Spencer tend to follow hard freezes like the one in February 2021. We shut off the water, replace the broken section and inspect the nearby pipe for more freeze damage.

Frozen Pipe Repair & Thawing

In February 2021, Spencer opened a water distribution station while residents dealt with low or no water. If only your house is dry during a freeze, the line is likely frozen, and we can thaw it safely.

Plumbing Winterization

Spencer's 2021 water troubles showed how fast a freeze can hit. We insulate exposed pipes, protect outdoor faucets and winterize vacant homes and rentals before cold weather arrives.

Outdoor Faucet & Hose Bib Freeze Repair

Standard outdoor faucets can freeze and split inside the wall. We replace them on Spencer homes with frost-free hose bibs that close the valve inside the heated part of the house.

Sprinkler System Winterization

Lawn sprinkler systems need draining and backflow protection before freezing weather. We winterize Spencer irrigation systems and repair backflow preventers that cracked in a cold snap.

Gas, Water Quality & Specialty Plumbing in Spencer

Gas Line Repair & Installation

Older gas piping can leak at fittings and connectors. If you smell gas in a Spencer home, get outside and call the gas utility, then call us to locate the leak, repair the piping and pressure test it.

Whole-House Water Filtration Installation

Spencer's city water comes from groundwater. If you want to reduce minerals, sediment or off tastes, we install whole-house filtration and under-sink reverse osmosis systems.

Backflow Testing & Certification

Spencer businesses and homes with irrigation systems rely on backflow preventers to protect the water supply. We test, certify, repair and replace backflow assemblies.

Outdoor Gas Line Installation (BBQ, Fire Pit, Outdoor Kitchen)

We run gas lines to grills, fire pits and outdoor kitchens in Spencer backyards, sized for the appliance, buried at the right depth and pressure tested before first use.

Walk-In Tub Plumbing Installation

A walk-in tub helps older Spencer residents bathe safely at home. We handle the plumbing, from supply lines and a fast drain to making sure your water heater can fill it.

Septic Plumbing & Pressure Tank Repair

If your property near Spencer runs on a private well or a septic system, we repair pressure tanks, pressure switches and the plumbing that carries waste from the house to the tank.

Commercial Plumbing in Spencer

Commercial Drain Cleaning

Restaurants, shops and offices in Spencer need drains that keep up with daily use. We clean commercial drains and jet grease lines, after hours if that keeps your doors open.

Commercial Plumbing Maintenance

Small apartment buildings and commercial properties in Spencer stay out of trouble with scheduled maintenance: water heater service, drain cleaning, fixture repair and backflow testing.

40+ yrs

Four decades with 1960s plumbing

Since our plumbing experience runs back to 1985, the decades of mixed repairs inside many Spencer homes are something we sort out calmly and methodically. Houses from the 1960s were barely twenty years old when we started, and we have followed homes like them through every stage since: the first water heater swaps, the first galvanized leaks, the first sewer root problems. That history helps us spot what is likely to fail next in a Spencer home, and fix it before it turns into an emergency. We explain the choices in plain terms, so you decide what to repair now and what can wait.

These guys were great! A breath of fresh air from the usual contractor/service. They cared about fixing the problem not how much they can charge. I had a same day service need, leak in between floors, the day before a trip. They came out same day and presented multiple solutions as well as keen explanations.

Spencer plumbing questions

Where does Spencer's water come from?

Spencer operates its own city water system. Federal drinking water records list it as a groundwater system with about 1,200 service connections. Main breaks, outages and billing questions go to the city. If the problem is on your property, such as a leak in the yard line, low pressure at every faucet or a failing water heater, call us any hour and we will trace it and repair it. Not sure which side the problem is on? We can help you check by reading the meter with everything off.

What happened to Spencer's water during the February 2021 freeze?

During the February 2021 arctic outbreak, when Oklahoma City dropped to minus 14°F, the City of Spencer opened a drinking water distribution station at the fire department on February 19 to help residents dealing with no or low water flow, Fox 25 reported. If your neighbors have water and you do not, the freeze or break is likely in your own plumbing, and that is where we come in. Leave a faucet open, shut off the main if you see water, and call us.

Is my address in Spencer or in Oklahoma City?

It is a fair question, because Oklahoma City borders Spencer on three sides. The answer decides which city handles your water bill, your permits and your inspections. Your property tax statement or utility bill usually shows the jurisdiction. When we take on a job that needs a permit, we confirm which city the house is in first, then file the paperwork with the right office and schedule the inspection for you. That keeps the job documented if you ever sell the house.

My Spencer house was built in the 1960s. What usually fails first?

At sixty years old, the usual trouble spots are galvanized water lines that have rusted inside, cast-iron drain lines that have scaled up or cracked, and the original sewer lateral, which can sag or let roots in. Watch for low pressure, rusty water, gurgling drains and slow tubs. A sewer camera inspection and a pressure test tell you where you stand before something breaks, and they help you plan repairs one project at a time. Financing is available if a bigger job like repiping makes sense.

Do you work on mobile homes in Spencer?

Yes. The Census counts about 54 mobile homes in Spencer, and they need a slightly different approach. Supply lines usually run under the floor inside the skirting, so a missing or damaged skirting panel can let wind freeze them. We repair and replace mobile home supply and drain lines, water heaters and fixtures, and we can insulate or wrap exposed pipe before winter. If a line has already split, we replace it with freeze-tolerant pipe where that makes sense and check the rest of the run under the home.
