What's included in our water heater repair in Oklahoma City

Every call starts with a diagnosis. We test the parts that commonly fail instead of swapping them until the heater runs. A typical visit covers:

  • Gas units. The pilot assembly, thermocouple or flame sensor, burner, gas control valve, draft and venting, and the combustion chamber.
  • Electric units. Upper and lower heating elements, both thermostats, the high-limit reset and the wiring at each element.
  • Valves and fittings. The temperature and pressure relief valve, the drain valve, the supply connections and the nipples on top of the tank.
  • Tank condition. Rust at the fittings, water under the jacket and the age on the data plate, so you know where the heater stands.
  • Safety checks. The vent, the gas shutoff and a temperature reading at the tap.

Signs your water heater needs repair

  • No hot water, or hot water that runs out much sooner than it used to
  • A pilot light that will not stay lit, or a status light flashing a fault code
  • Popping, rumbling or crackling from the tank while it heats
  • Rusty or discolored hot water, or a rotten smell on the hot side only
  • Water dripping from the relief valve pipe, the drain valve or the fittings on top
  • A breaker for an electric heater that trips again right after you reset it

ENERGY STAR notes that a water heater can seem fine and then fail without warning, and it lists corrosion, rumbling, leaks at joints and rusty water as signs a unit is breaking down. Catch them early and you get a planned repair instead of a flooded closet.

Winter Water Heater Repair

Winter is the hardest season on a water heater in Oklahoma City. Colder water comes in from the street, so the heater runs longer to reach temperature and every weak part gets tested at once. A lower element that was barely hanging on gives out. A marginal thermocouple lets the pilot drop on a windy night.

Our winter water heater repair calls usually involve:

  • Pilot outages from wind and drafts, especially on heaters in garages and exterior closets.
  • Burned-out lower elements on electric heaters working harder against colder supply water.
  • Frozen or split supply lines and relief valve piping on heaters in unheated spaces.

Extreme cold makes all of it worse. On February 16, 2021, Oklahoma City dropped to minus 14°F, according to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey, and heaters that had run fine for years quit that week. For garage heaters, insulating exposed pipes and sealing drafts around the closet helps them ride out the next cold snap.

Freeze season is here in Oklahoma City.

Frozen pipes, burst pipes, split hose bibs and sprinkler backflow damage. We answer 24/7 when the temperature drops. See our winter plumbing services.

Our water heater repair process

  1. Triage on the phone. We ask about fuel type, age and symptoms, and walk you through shutting off water and fuel if it leaks.
  2. Read the data plate. The model and serial number tell us the parts it uses and how old it is.
  3. Test, do not guess. We check elements and thermostats with a meter. On gas units we check the pilot, thermocouple, burner, gas valve and draft.
  4. Explain the options. You get a clear repair price and, if the tank is near the end of its life, an honest comparison with replacement.
  5. Repair and test. We replace the failed part, refill and purge the tank, and watch a full heating cycle.
  6. Final safety check. We confirm the vent draws on gas units, check the relief valve discharge and measure the temperature at a faucet.

No hot water this morning?

If it is leaking, shut off the cold supply to the heater, then call. We answer 24/7.

Common water heater problems and fixes compared

SymptomLikely causeUsual fix
No hot water from a gas heaterPilot out, worn thermocouple or flame sensor, failed gas valveClean or replace the pilot assembly or sensor, or replace a gas control that tests bad
Hot water runs out fast on an electric heaterBurned-out lower element or thermostatReplace the element and thermostat as needed
Popping or rumblingSediment on the tank bottomFlush the tank if caught early, plan a replacement if it is severe
Water at the relief valveOverheating, high pressure or a worn valveFind the cause first, then replace the valve
Water under the tank jacketCorroded tankReplacement, since a tank cannot be patched

A discharging relief valve is a safety device doing its job, so we always find out why it opened before replacing it.

What affects the cost of water heater repair

We price the actual job after we see it, and you hear the price before we start. The main factors:

  • The failed part. An element or thermocouple is a smaller job than a gas control valve or a vent repair.
  • Fuel type and design. Power-vent and direct-vent gas units have more parts than a standard atmospheric heater.
  • Access. Attic and tight closet installs take longer to work on safely.
  • Age of the heater. Rheem puts the average life of a tank water heater at 8 to 12 years, and ENERGY STAR suggests considering a replacement once a unit is past 10 years. On an older tank, we will tell you if water heater replacement makes more sense than another repair.

Tired of repairs altogether? A tankless water heater is another path, and we will compare it honestly. Financing is available for larger jobs.

Water heaters in Oklahoma City: local factors

Many Oklahoma City homes keep the water heater in a garage, utility closet or attic. Garage units are often the first to lose a pilot in a north wind, and attic units add a different risk: when they leak, the water comes through a ceiling.

Sediment is the other everyday issue. Rheem recommends flushing a tank once a year, and every six months where water is hard. It is one of the cheapest ways to get full life out of a heater.

Gas safety matters on every call. The CDC reports that more than 400 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning not linked to fires, and it advises having your water heater and other fuel-burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year. If a vent is loose or a flame burns yellow, we fix that first, and our gas line repair service handles problems with the supply itself. Want to know who is coming? Meet our team.

Smell gas near your water heater? Do not try to relight the pilot. Leave the house, then call Oklahoma Natural Gas at 800-458-4251 or 911 from outside. Do not flip light switches or use your phone indoors. Once the utility says it is safe, call us to find and fix the cause.

Why Oklahoma City chooses us for water heater repair

Since 1985

A Master Plumber on gas and electric units

Our plumbing experience goes back to 1985, and our work is state-licensed. We have repaired just about every kind of tank water heater found in local homes, from older standing-pilot gas units in garage closets to newer electric models with electronic controls. We test before we replace, so you pay only for the part that failed.

24/7

No hot water at midnight is our problem too

We pick up the phone nights, weekends and holidays. If your heater is leaking, we talk you through shutting off the cold supply and the gas or breaker before we arrive, so a small drip does not become a soaked garage floor. Same-day service is often available, and during hard freezes we move fast, because a family without hot water in January needs more than a callback tomorrow.

Straight answers on repair versus replace

Our customers give us 4.9 stars across 88 Google reviews, and a lot of that comes from honest advice. If a thermocouple, element or gas valve is the problem, we fix it. If the tank itself is leaking, no part will save it, and we say so plainly. We stand behind our work and would rather earn your next call than sell you a heater you do not need.

These guys were great! A breath of fresh air from the usual contractor/service. They cared about fixing the problem not how much they can charge. I had a same day service need, leak in between floors, the day before a trip. They came out same day and presented multiple solutions as well as keen explanations.

Water Heater Repair questions, answered

Why do I have no hot water from my gas water heater?

The usual causes are a pilot that went out, a worn thermocouple or flame sensor, a dirty burner, a venting problem that trips a safety switch, or a failed gas control valve. On newer units, a fault code points us in the right direction. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call Oklahoma Natural Gas or 911 from outside.

Why does my electric water heater run out of hot water so fast?

Most electric tanks have two heating elements and two thermostats. When the lower element burns out, you get a short burst of hot water from the top of the tank and then lukewarm water. A failed upper element or a tripped high-limit switch usually means no hot water at all. Both are common, quick repairs once the bad part is confirmed.

Is a leaking water heater worth repairing?

It depends on where the water comes from. Leaks at the drain valve, the temperature and pressure relief valve or the pipe fittings on top can usually be repaired. Water seeping from the tank body or from under the outer jacket means the steel tank has corroded through, and the only real fix is replacement. Shut off the cold supply until we can look.

What causes popping or rumbling noises in my water heater?

That sound is usually sediment. Minerals settle at the bottom of the tank, and the burner heats water trapped under that layer until it pops. Rheem notes that sediment acts like insulation, so the heater runs longer on every cycle. Flushing helps if the buildup is caught early.

What temperature should my water heater be set to?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges people to set water heaters to 120°F, which cuts scald risk and saves energy. CPSC says most adults will suffer a third-degree burn from 150°F water in two seconds and from 140°F water in six seconds. We check the setting on every repair.
