What's included in our water pressure repair in Oklahoma City
We treat pressure as a whole-house measurement, not a single faucet complaint. A pressure visit covers:
- Static and flow testing. A gauge on a hose bib shows pressure with everything off, then with several fixtures running.
- Valve checks. We confirm the main shutoff and fixture valves are fully open and working.
- Regulator diagnosis. Testing, adjusting, repairing or replacing the pressure-reducing valve.
- Thermal expansion control. Checking or installing the expansion tank at the water heater.
- Finding the restriction. Clogged aerators, scaled galvanized pipe or a leak stealing flow.
Common causes of low water pressure
| Cause | The clue | The fix |
| Clogged aerator or showerhead | Only one fixture is weak | Clean or replace it |
| Partly closed main valve | Every fixture is weak after recent plumbing work | Open or replace the valve |
| Failing pressure regulator | Pressure dropped suddenly across the house | Adjust, rebuild or replace it |
| Scaled galvanized pipe | Older home, pressure fading for years, rusty water | Replace the worst runs or repipe |
| Leak in the service line | High bill, meter moves with everything off | Locate and repair the line |
| Clogged whole-house filter | Pressure fell after a filter was installed | Change the cartridge |
Galvanized steel pipe rusts from the inside until the opening is a fraction of its original size, and the only lasting fix is new pipe. Our whole-house repiping service replaces it with copper or PEX. If the leak is underground, water line repair restores full flow from the meter. A whole-house water filter needs its cartridge changed on schedule, or it becomes the restriction.
How low is too low? The code's design tables call for at least 8 psi of flowing pressure at a sink or lavatory and 20 psi at a tank toilet or a pressure-balancing shower valve. A home that drops near those numbers when two fixtures run has a problem worth finding.
Why high water pressure is a problem
Strong pressure feels good in the shower, but it costs you elsewhere. Every faucet cartridge, toilet fill valve, washer hose and dishwasher valve takes more strain, and pipes bang when valves snap shut. The plumbing code Oklahoma uses draws a firm line: where water pressure within a building exceeds 80 psi static, an approved pressure-reducing valve is required to bring it down to 80 psi or less. If your gauge reads above that, it is not a matter of preference. It needs to be fixed.
Water Pressure Regulator Installation & Replacement
A pressure-reducing valve, often called a PRV or regulator, is a bell-shaped brass valve on the main line, usually near where water enters the house or close to the main shutoff. Inside, a spring and diaphragm hold downstream pressure at a set point no matter how high the street pressure climbs. The code requires these valves to meet a recognized standard, include a strainer, and be designed to stay open if they fail, so you do not lose water entirely.
Regulators wear out. The diaphragm stiffens, the seat erodes and the strainer clogs, so a valve that held steady for years starts letting pressure creep up or sag. We test it, adjust it if it still responds, and replace it when it does not. A replacement includes a new regulator sized to your line, shutoff valves on either side where practical, a gauge reading after installation, and a set point you approve.
Thermal expansion and expansion tanks
When a regulator or check valve closes off your plumbing from the city main, heated water has nowhere to expand. Pressure spikes every time the water heater runs, which is why the relief valve may drip. The plumbing code Oklahoma uses requires a thermal expansion control device on the water heater's cold supply in that situation, sized to the manufacturer's instructions. An expansion tank that has lost its air charge does no good, so we check the tank whenever we work on a regulator.
What affects the cost of water pressure repair
- The cause. Cleaning aerators is small. Replacing a regulator is a mid-sized job. Repiping is a project.
- Access to the regulator. One buried in a yard box or behind a wall takes more work.
- Add-ons. An expansion tank or new shutoff valves often go in at the same time.
We price the work after testing, so you pay to fix the real cause, and financing is available for larger repairs.
Water pressure in Oklahoma City: local factors
Oklahoma City's water travels a long way. The City says its raw water comes from supply reservoirs spanning nearly 250 miles across the state and is treated at two plants in the city before it reaches the distribution system. Street pressure across a system that large varies with elevation and distance, which is why the code tells plumbers to design for the minimum pressure available where street pressures vary. A house on a high spot may run lower than one downhill, and a home that once had strong pressure may change after nearby system work. If only one tap is weak, start with faucet and sink repair.
