Mustang's water and your water heater
Mustang pumps most of its own water. The city's most recent water quality report lists 11 municipal wells as the source, topped up with purchased Oklahoma City water, and a 2018 regional supply plan shown to the council places those wells in the Garber-Wellington formation. USGS hydrologists classify water from that aquifer as calcium-magnesium bicarbonate, and they note it picks up more dissolved minerals the deeper a well goes.
Heat drives those minerals out of solution. In a tank heater they drop to the bottom as sediment, where a gas burner has to heat through the layer and an electric lower element can end up buried in it. The results are familiar: popping or rumbling, less hot water than the tank should hold, slow recovery and a tank bottom that runs hotter than it should.
If you're on a private well outside the city mains, your water goes straight from the ground to the heater with nothing blended in. A water test tells us how much scale to expect, and how often your tank should be flushed.
Winter water heater repair in Mustang
Winter is hard on any water heater, because the water coming into the tank is colder and the heater runs longer to bring it up to temperature. A heater that was barely keeping up in October can quit in January. Weak thermocouples, worn elements and sediment-choked tanks tend to give out during the first long cold spell.
A deep freeze adds more strain. Right next door, Oklahoma City registered minus 14°F on February 16, 2021, per the state's climatological survey. A heater in an unheated garage has to fight cold air around the tank and the vent at the same time it's heating near-freezing water. We bring common thermocouples, elements, thermostats and valves on winter calls so a repair doesn't wait on a parts run.
Our water heater repair process
- Check the basics. Gas supply, pilot and burner on gas units. Power, breakers, elements and thermostats on electric units.
- Test the safety parts. We check the temperature and pressure relief valve, the venting and the gas control, because a heater that runs unsafely isn't fixed.
- Flush the sediment. We drain and flush the tank to remove built-up minerals, then look at the anode rod.
- Repair or advise. We replace the failed part, or tell you plainly when the tank itself is leaking and repair no longer makes sense.
