Emergency plumbing in Mustang starts at the shutoff
Mustang has two kinds of water setups, and the shutoff works differently on each. Inside city limits, you're on the city system, a mix of municipal well water and supply purchased from Oklahoma City, according to Mustang's latest water quality report. Your meter box sits near the street, and most houses also have a main valve where the line enters, often in the garage, a utility closet or beside the water heater.
Country properties outside the city's pipes often get water from a rural district or a private well instead. With a well, the quickest way to stop a flood is to kill power to the pump at its breaker, then close the valve near the pressure tank. If the pump stays on, it keeps pushing water into the break no matter how many faucets you close.
Smell gas? Get everyone outside first and make the call to the gas utility or 911 from the yard. On the way out, leave switches, appliances and anything else that could spark alone. After the utility clears the house, we locate the failed joint or fitting and fix the gas line itself.
What counts as a plumbing emergency
Call us right away for any of these:
- Water spraying or running from a pipe, fitting, supply hose or water heater
- Sewage backing up into a tub, shower or floor drain
- Every faucet in the house dry on a below-freezing morning
- Water pooling under the heater, or steady flow from its relief valve pipe
- A well pump that runs without stopping, which can mean a broken line between the well and the house
- Water coming up through a floor, or a warm, damp spot on a slab
Speed matters because even a small split feeds water into floors and walls nonstop until someone closes a valve. A dripping faucet or one slow drain can usually wait for a scheduled visit. If you aren't sure which side of that line you're on, call and ask. We'll tell you honestly whether it can wait.
Our emergency process
- Answer and triage. A plumber picks up, asks what you're seeing and walks you through the right shutoff for a city or well system.
- Make it safe. When we get there, we double-check that the water or gas is shut, track down the failure and secure the area.
- Repair or stabilize. Whenever we can, the permanent repair happens on the first visit. If parts or a permit are needed, we make a safe temporary fix and restore water to the rest of the house.
- Explain the options. You get a plain account of what failed, why it failed, and what it takes to keep it from happening again.

Emergency repairs still follow Mustang's rules
An emergency doesn't change who is allowed to do the work. Mustang's Community Development Department limits homeowners to a handful of minor jobs and reserves the rest of plumbing and gas work for licensed contractors. Rental property gets no exception: owners and renters alike need licensing and permits to work on it. If you rent, call your landlord or property manager right after you shut off the water.
State law adds its own layer: under the 1955 Plumbing License Law that the Construction Industries Board enforces, a state-licensed contractor also has to be registered with every city whose jurisdiction they work in. When a night repair turns into a job that needs a permit, such as a water heater replacement or a gas line repair, we stabilize it that night and take care of the permit with the city's Community Development Department once the office opens.
