What the City of Yukon requires for a new water heater
In Yukon, a water heater replacement is a permitted job. The city's residential plumbing permit schedule lists water heaters under both new construction and alteration or replacement, and it lists gas vent replacement and gas pressure tests as separate items. Permits come from the city's Development Services office at 500 West Main Street, which is responsible for issuing plumbing permits and inspecting work for code compliance.
Inspections are requested by phone, fax or the city's online form, and the plumbing inspection categories include both water heaters and gas. That matters because the inspector looks at more than the tank. Venting, the gas connector and shutoff, the temperature and pressure relief valve and its discharge pipe, and clearances all get checked. We set the job up to pass the first time and handle the permit and inspection request for you.
One thing to confirm first: Yukon is almost completely surrounded by Oklahoma City, so a house near the edge of town may actually sit inside Oklahoma City limits. In that case, Oklahoma City issues the permit, and we file there instead.
Fitting a new heater into an older Yukon house
Census estimates put the median year built for Yukon housing at 1979. By now, the connections behind a heater in one of those homes are often a patchwork left by earlier swaps. When we replace one, we look closely at what the new heater will connect to:
- Venting. Old vent pipe can be rusted, poorly sloped or the wrong size for a new unit. Gas vent replacement is its own permit item in Yukon.
- Gas connector and shutoff. We replace old flexible connectors and stiff valves rather than reusing them.
- Relief valve discharge. The pipe has to run to an approved location, not just stop above the floor.
- Closet clearances and air. Closet installs need the right clearances and combustion air, which older closets may not provide.
- Garage platform and drain pan. Garage heaters need proper elevation and protection, and a pan where a leak could damage finished space.
Choosing the replacement
Most Yukon replacements are like-for-like gas tanks, but it is worth a minute to consider the alternatives while the old heater is coming out anyway.
| Type | Good fit when | Things to weigh |
| Gas tank | You already have gas and venting in place | Venting condition, closet clearances |
| Electric tank | No gas line, or a location that can't be vented | Slower recovery, needs the right circuit |
| Tankless gas | You want endless hot water and space savings | Gas line sizing and new venting |
| Heat pump electric | A garage or large utility room with room for air | Space, noise and condensate drain |

Winter water heater replacement
A tank that has been weakening all fall often gives out in the cold months, when incoming water is coldest and the heater runs longest. If yours fails in winter, shut off the cold-water supply at the top of the tank, turn the gas valve to off or switch off the breaker, and call. We answer 24/7 and often have you back in hot water the same day.
Our replacement process
- Assess and size. We check the space, venting, gas or electrical supply, and your household's hot water needs.
- Pull the permit. We file with the City of Yukon, or with Oklahoma City if your address falls inside its limits.
- Remove the old heater. We drain it, disconnect it safely and haul it away.
- Install and update. New heater, connectors, shutoffs, venting and relief valve piping, all to current code.
- Test and inspect. We fire the heater, check for leaks and proper draft, then schedule the city inspection.
